Archibald George was charged and convicted at Malta Court Martial for striking Corp. Phillips onboard H.M. ship Indies. 14yr transportation sentence. Embarked the ‘Marquis of Hastings’ on 11/07/1842, arriving Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) 08/11/1842.

Ship Surgeon’s Report: Conduct very good, trustworthy and recommended. Employed now as a cook.

Aged 23yrs; single man; native place - Oxford, England; trade - blacksmith but in the Royal Marines 4-5years; Protestant; can read & write; 5’8”; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes.

22/11/1842: Probation term of 3yrs. 2nd Class. Sent to Maria Island penal settlement (island off the east coast of Tasmania). Clear conduct record, conduct noted as “good”.

12/04/1843: Died, at Maria Island, of inflamation. (Report to Superintendent).
