Convict Notes

1847, 13 August: William GILES, 56, per Isabella Watson – bond, Protestant – was buried in the grounds of the Prisoners’ Barracks, at Hobart, having been a patient in the General Hospital at Hobart. The ceremony was performed by Wm Hesketh (see https://librariestas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/ Resource RGD34/1/2 no 1614). Note the difference in age given on two official records. His Conduct Record indicates a birth date in 1807, while his Burial Record suggests he was born much earlier. Of the two, the former is deemed more reliable.

1845, 3 February: Released from the first stage of probation. His behaviour is described as “very good” and he is a “useful and observant” employee. 1847, 9 August: William GILES per Isabella Watson; tried at Down, 11 October 1841, 10 years; Ticket of Leave; died in Hobart Hospital (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Register; Registers of convict deaths, 1845-1874). 1847, 10 August: His ToL is officially granted, according to his Conduct Record (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-26$init=CON33-1-26p76).

1842, 3 August: On arrival in VDL, he was 35, married, could read and write and was a Protestant. He was 5'11" tall, with a fresh complexion, black to grey hair and brown eyes. The ship's surgeon described his health as good.

TRIED: At Down on 11 October 1841 and sentenced to 10 years for stealing a heifer from his brother, Robert Giles (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-26$init=CON33-1-26p76).

NATIVE PLACE: Carlingford, Louth (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-26$init=CON33-1-26p76).
