The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

The whole of the prisoners who were capitally convicted at Warwick and Coventry Assizes, have been reprieved. Staffordshire Advertiser, 24 Aug 1822.

1828, 18 January: Thomas GILL per Ocean 3 was admitted to the Phoenix Hulk, from which he was sent to Port Macquarie per the barque "Lucy Anne" on a Colonial sentence (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891; Phoenix Hulk: Official Returns, 1828). 1824, 11 December: Thomas GILL per Ocean 3, labourer, tried 7 August 1822 at Warwick Assizes, and sentenced to life, received a sentence of three years from the Parramatta Bench for a Colonial conviction. He was sent down to Port Macquarie per "Sally" on 22 December 1824, and returned on 23 March 1828 (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891; Port Macquarie Penal Settlement; Port Macquarie: List of Convicts, 1822-1825). . 1875, 8 September: Thomas GILL died on this day. No record of where or the cause of death (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Records, 1810-1891; Convicts Deaths; Annual Returns of Convicts Who Died, 1867-1891).
