The Assizes at Leicester, which commenced on Wednesday the 25th of March did not conclude until Wednesday the 2nd of April, going to the great number of prisoners which word for trial. The calendar contains a list of 83. The concourse persons in court to witness the trial of the Luddites was extremely great. At the above Assizes, John Gretton and Robert Goadby were convicted of a burglary (in company with George Shipman, who was admitted in evidence), in the dwelling house of Miss Lucy's, in Hinckley, in the night of 17th February last, and stealing therein considerable property. Both prisoners were condemned, and Goadby left for execution. Sarah Shipman and Charles Haddon were convicted of receiving part of the property, knowing it to be stolen, and sentenced to 14 years’ transportation. John Culley was also convicted of burglary at Miss Lucy's in the night of the 6th of December last, in company with the said George Shipman, and was condemned Northampton Mercury, 5 April 1817. John Gratton, (Gretton), Charles Haddon and John Culley, were all also transported on the ship “Ocean”.
