Text type Trial account Defendants WILLIAM GOODWIN Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 8th September 1831 Reference Number t18310908-50 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 1578. WILLIAM GOODWIN was indicted for stealing, on the 27th of July , 1 coat, value 1l. , the goods of John Fordham Taylor . JOHN FORDHAM TAYLOR . I am clerk at Messrs. Hoare's brewhouse. I left this coat in my chaise on the 27th of July, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, while I stepped into a house - I told a person to mind it; he turned his back, and the coat was taken: this is it. GEORGE COLEMAN . I was going up the street, on the opposite side; I saw the prisoner, and another lad in a blue coat; they were together; the prisoner went to the side of the chaise, snatched the coat out, rolled it up, and ran away; the other man pushed the prisoner off as fast as he could - I told the gentleman of it. JAMES TAYLOR . I am a headborough. I was coming up Whitecross-street, at a quarter to twelve o'clock that day, and saw the prisoner, with this coat; there were two others in his company - I asked him what he had there; he said a coat which he had bought at a shop - I said, "Come and show me where;" as we were going along, he said he bought it of a man in Bethnal-green-road for 9s. - I found the prosecutor out.(Property produced and sworn to.) GUILTY . Aged 16. - Transported for Seven Years .
