29/7/1858 Exeter Flying Post Devon, England: CROWN BAR,—MONDAY ATTEMPT TO MURDER A WARDER. ROBERT GOSWELL, 22, was charged with having th assaulted with intent to murder William Holberton, on the 29th June last. Edited** William Holberton was chief warder in the borough gaol of Plymouth. In May last the prisoner was brought to the gaol on a charge of felony. Robert Goswell was 26 years old on arrival in WA. He was single, 5'7¾" tall, dark brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, middling stout, sword cut on right thigh. 23/6/1862: TOL 16/10/1867: CP Listed as a Labourer/general servant/herdsman. 13/1/1874: Robert was hung at Perth Goal.




Goswell murdered Mary Anne Lloyd, a former lover. Under the influence of alcohol, he arrived at here home with a gun, yelled out "Here you are my lady, take that" and shot her dead. He pleaded guilty but acting while insane, but was found guilty at a trial on 26 December 1873. He was sentenced to death. [Source: The Herald (Fremantle) 3 January 1874, page 3.
