1851 - WITNESS on the marriage of Helen Black & Thomas Davey at the St Georges Church. 14 July 1851 1852 - Birth of child; DAVID Born on the 12 Aug 1852 and Baptised on the 1 Nov. 1852 in the Female House of Correction. Parents; David Whiteman & Jemina Gowans.




Jemima married David Whiteman, a convict from St Helier, Jersey, in Hobart in 1850. She gave birth to their daughter Maria Whiteman in 1856 in the nursery buildings, Cascades Female factory.




Jemima GOWANS was convicted at Edinburgh, Scotland on 11 May 1848 for robbery - stealing a watch. Previous convictions - at age 24 had been imprisoned 13 times. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Cadet' arriving at Hobart 20 Oct 1852. Single woman; aged 24 yrs; nursemaid/needlewoman. Native place of birth: Edinburugh, Scotland. VDL: Assigned to work services. 21 Jan 1850: Married David WHITEMAN (free by servitude, Forfarshire ship to Colony) 21 Oct 1851: Ticket of Leave granted. Jan 1852: Drunk & disorderly. 3 mths hard labour at the Female Factory, Hobart. 20 Oct 1852: Hobart Supreme Court - stealing. Further sentence of 10 years. 15 mths to be served at the Cascades Female Factory, Hobart. 1853: to be assigned to her husband. Further notes of misconduct. Children: Jane WHITEMAN admitted to the Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart on 2 June 1855, aged 4 yrs. Discharged 17 March 1857 to care of her mother, now on a Ticket of Leave. Maria WHITEMAN admitted to the Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart on 3 April 1856, aged 1 yr 6mths. Discharged 8 April 1857 to Rev. J. Smales, Bathurst St. Returnd to Home 28 Jan 1869. Further discharged on 31 Mar 1869 to D. Whitechurch, Evandale.
