The March 1827 Edinburgh High Court of Justiciary case against Allan Grant, carter; James Kenney Stewart, pensioner; Mary Muirhead & Isabella Kerr or Gray is legally reported in Syme (1829) Reports of Proceeding in the High Court of Justiciary: From 1826 to 1829, pp 138-146 for Case No.38 on 5 March 1827. The four accused were charged - on 10/11 January 1827 within the house of James Kenney Stewart at North Bank Street, steal from Mark Dow £40 in notes and coin etc; and at the rear of the house throw Mark Dow down a stair, rob him of his coat andd shoes and did murder him. Allan Grant had seven previous conviction including 3 in 1819 at the Police Court. Surgeons William Newbigging and William Brown 'who examined the deceased at the Police Office' found his 'neck was broken probably as a result of falling down the stairs. The four accused were found guilty only of the theft and sentenced to transportations- Allan Grant for Life; Stewart & Muirhead for 14 years; and Gray for 7 years.
