The ship named 'Providence' was built in Calcutta, India in 1808. 649 tons. The 1811 voyage brought many convicts from Ireland to Australia. 73rd Regiment. Also several free settlers. 5-6 deaths on voyage. The ship was lastly scuttled at St. Martin's, Isle of Scilly in 1833.

John Grant was 18 years old and arrived on the 'Providence 1' on 2/7/1811. He was assigned to Dr William Redfern, who had been deported to Australia. Redfern put John Grant in charge of his farm at Campbelltown and for the next two years felled trees and cleared the land. 10/1/1814: John married Jane O'Brien in st. Phillip's Church of England. When a catholic priest arrived in 1820 they remarried in the Catholic Church. 1820: Grant was made a Constable of the Campbelltown District. He also bought his own land, 60 acres at Liverpool. 1821: Took up his allotment of fifty acres at Hartley, a property he called 'Moyne' at this time he owned 9 head of cattle, 180 sheep and 34 hogs and 1 horse. 1823: Death of his wife Jane. She died at Bathurst but is buried on the family property in the Vale of Clwydd. He was left with three children., Jeremiah, Mary and Eleanor. 1833: Married Elizabeth West and had 9 children. He spent his remaining years between Hartley and Merriganowry around Lachlan flats. On one of these trips in 1862 he had an accident near Carcoar, that left him and invalid until his death. He died on 13th February, 1866 and he was supposedly the richest Catholic man in Australia.
