1838: On arrival in NSW, William GRAY, a Protestant, was 24, single, a quarryman and pump borer. He could read and write. His native place was Co Antrim. He had no previous convictions. He was described as 5'9¼", with a dark complexion, dark brown hair and hazel eyes (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838). 1845, 15 July: Granted a Certificate of Freedom No.45/934. Listed as 31yo. By this time he was “disabled in the right arm from paralysis” (see New South Wales, Australia, Certificates of Freedom, 1810-1814, 1827-1867).

OCCUPATION: Quarryman and pump borer 1837, 17 August: William GRAY was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Antrim (prisoner #697). He had been tried on 13 July 1837, convicted and sentenced to 7 years by Judge Burton for “pig stealing”. He was described as 23 (born 1814), 5’10” tall with brown eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion. 1837, 26 August: Discharged from Kilmainham to be “embarked on the convict ship Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).
