In the colony, John was assigned as a servant to John and Maria Wood (nèe Kentwell) at Baulkham Hills.
John Wood died in 1832, leaving Maria with 5 young children.

John Greenwood and Maria then married March 17 1834 at St Johns, Parramatta.
Maria had been born Maria Kentwell, the daughter of William Kentwell (Convict, Admiral Barrington, 1791) and Elizabeth Morris (Convict, Mary Ann 1791).
John and Maria had a further 6 children.
