Sarah Hague/Haug/Haig on board the Lord Wellington arriving in 1820, appears to be a married woman in England, however a letter from her husband, George Hague, shows the belief that both Sarah and George had, that their marriage was no longer valid as she was sentenced to death, which was later changed to transportation for life (14 years). Sarah Hague would have arrived in Australia with the belief she was a single woman and free to marry. Letter with references below.. In February, 1821, the following letter was sent to Earl Bathurst, London, 'Who was then Secretary of State for the Colonies. " My Lord, 'ï ; Nearly 2 years ago (in May 1819) the wife of George Haigh of Hunslet Carr near this place, was convicted here of picking some body's pocket, and sentenced to 14 years transportation. Her name is Sarah But instead of Sarah Haig, it is reported that she sometimes went by the name Lacy or Lasey. Lacy was a paramour with whom she eloped, passing with many as his wife. l mention their example, lest she may have been entered in the list of convicts as Sarah Lacy, rather than as Sarah Haigh, her lawful name. After sentence pronounced, while she lay at York Castle , so before her embarkation for New South Wales, her husband, it seems, consulted some person whom he deemed a lawyer, who told him that the sentenced cancelled his marriage with his convict wife and that he was at the liberty to marry again, she being as it were dead in law, by his account. Similar cases have sometimes caused us embarrassment at this parish church, on the hubands or wives of convicts presenting themselves for remarriage, having been told that the sentence did away the former marriage by making the convict as it were dead in law, set the other party at complete liberty. This persuasion has been very strong and obstinate, when the convict had been first sentenced for death, and that sentence had then been commuted into one of transportation for life to New South Wales. In the like persuasion George, though she was so preceding sentence of Death, and though the transportation was to be but for a term of years, George Haigh ventured to marry another wife, before his convict wife was yet embarked for her destination. The Hunslet overseers have treated this last marriage as null and removed the woman during her late pregnancy to her own place of settlement. But information has been received at Hunslet Carr, that the convict Sarah Haigh or Lacy died on her passage to New South Wales. The purpose of the present application is to request your Lordship to have the goodness to ascertain, as soon as you conveniently can, weth from the official returns or otherwise, whether the said convict Sarah Hagh, Haigh or Lacy be now living or dead and to transmit a certificate of the result, directed to Geo: Haigh, Hunslet Carr to the Care of Jonathan Hemsworth, Clerk of the Parish Church, Leeds. I am, my Lord, Your Lordship's most obedient and humble. Robart Humphreys Minister/Clerk in Orders Parish Church, Leeds Sarah, aged 34, charwoman, the wife of George Hague (sic) had been sentenced at Leeds Boro (sic) Quarter Session on 3rd August 1818 to 14 years transportation. (2). She arrived in the colony of New South Wales per ‘Lord Wellington’ on 20th January 1820. The ship had embarked prisoners in Ireland and sailed via Rio de Janero with 121 female prisoners arriving in Sydney with no loss of life and none needing to be transferred to the colonial hospital. (3) According to the convict records of 1820, she was listed as Sarah Haug and has been assigned to Mrs Thornton (4) Ironically, as Sarah Hague she married William Toppings at St Matthews Windsor NSW on the 1st July 1822 (5).
