11/2/1854 Staffordshire Advertiser Staffordshire, England: A KEEPER SHOT BY A POACHER.___Last week, while two keepers were watching a cover on the estate of Sir Peregrine Acland, near the village of Sampford-Brett, in Somersetshire, four men armed with guns, entered the cover in pursuit of game, and on leaving were followed by the two keepers, when one of the poachers turned and fired at them. The shot struck the keeper named Borcher, and it was ultimately found necessary to amputate his arm. Mr. Trebb at one proceeded for medical aid, and on his way came up with four men armed with guns, and desired them to stop. They ran away, but Mr. Trebb caught one named Pope, who confessed that another of his companions named Hake fired at Borcher. Hake has since been apprehended. Borcher still lies in a precarious state. Abraham Hake was 28 when convicted in 1854 and 30 years old on arrival in WA. (Do not know what happened to his first family - nothing listed on the WA BDM.) 29/3/1876: Married Mary McLaughlin/Callaghan nee Sullivan. Mary arrived in the colony as the wife of Pensioner Guard Cornelius Callaghan on the Robert Small in August 1853. Mary died 7/7/1900. No death date recorded for Abraham on the WA BDM.
