Convict Notes

In January 1849 it was reported in a High Court of Justiciary case that Criminal Officer James McLevy whilst investigating a case of theft of watches and chain, 'obtained information' that John Hamilton, broker in Canongate and his wife Mary Gardens or Hamilton had been resetting such stolen property. McLevy initially search the shop without success, but persevered and evnetually found a false cavity in a wall cover by wallpaper which contained numerous stolen watches. John Hamilton was found guilty of reset and received transportation for 10 years. The case against Mrs Hamilton was found 'Not Proven' - see Scotsman newspaper 3 January 1849, p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary'.
