Convict Notes

In another paragraph we mention the robbery of Mr. Gikerson's house of Newtown. The depredator has been discovered, and is now in gaol. He proves to be the well-known wholesale robber, Robert Hamilton, whose pilfering exploits we mentioned last year, and who has been twice convicted at the Sessions. No sooner had he got loose from confinement than he turned to his old trade of entering out-houses, farmyards &c. where he milked the cows, and carried off whatever came within his clutches. He twice entered Mr. Gikerson's House by pushing aside the bolt of the door with his knife. The first time (about … some month ago) he stole a … cold roast beef. The second time (... night the 28th ult.) he carried silk handkerchiet, a ... coat, an under coat, a bushel and a pocket. ... Carlisle Patriot, 5 April 1817. County Sessions. The notorious Robert Hamilton was charged with entering the house of George Gilkerson, of Newtown, near this City, and stealing thereout various articles, as mentioned in our paper of the 5th instant. George Gilkerson examined. Lives at Newtown. His house was broken …. Carlisle Patriot, 19 April 1817. At the conclusion of the last Quarter Sessions, Dr. Heysham, visiting Magistrate of the gaol, requested the Sheriff to make immediate application to the Secretary of State for the speedy removal of the convicts under sentence of transportation; with which request Lord Sidmouth readily complied, and on Saturday last an order arrived here for the removal of Isaac Sanderson, Robert Hamilton, John Smith, John Harkness, and Charles Malvell, to the hulks, who set off for their destination at six o'clock on Monday morning. Carlisle Patriot, 10 May 1817.
