Convict Notes

19/10/1833 Staffordshire Advertiser Staffordshire, England: Richard Harper, an interesting looking lad, was convicted of picking the pocket of Ann Carter of 3s6d. The prisoner who is but 14 years of age, appears to have been the agent of an organized gang of thieves. The robbery was committed on Wolverhampton race course with somewhat less dexterity than daring. The prosecutrix was looking at the thimble table, when the youthful delinquent looked her full in the face__thrust his hand into her pocket, extracted its contents and ran off. The woman instantly gave the alarm to her father and brother, who pursued and overtook him. The father of the woman laid hold of him, and was forthwith knocked down by one of the prisoner's confederates. The brother then laid hold of him, and he shared a similar fagte. The pursuit became general, and the culprit was eventually secured. The prisoner, who was undefended, cross-examined the witnesses with considerable ingenuigty. He was found guilty__and as it was a second conviction, he was deemed incorrigible, and sentenced to seven years transportation. Richard Harper was listed as 14 years old on arrival - he could read, and his native place was Birmingham. Richard was 4'7½" tall, fair ruddy complexion, light brown hair, bluish eyes, scar on nose, scar top of forefinger of left hand, scar back of lower left arm, tops of each little finger crooked. Not listed on the NSW Gov. Convict records.
