JAILS: 13 October, 1848: It's possible he was held after his committal at the Ely County Lock Up House (opened circa 1848) or the Ely Gaol and House of Correction in Market Street. --0--

Newspaper report of his trial: From the "Bury and Norwich Post", Wednesday 21 March, 1849, p3: "Rape. — Thomas Haynes, aged 20, was convicted of a rape upon Rachael Crow [a married woman], of Littleport, in September last; transportation for life. The Judge said he would have hung him if he could." --00--

TRIAL: 14 March, 1849: He was convicted at the County Assizes at Cambridge of rape, and sentenced to transportation for life. This was his first conviction (England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892; England; Cambridgeshire; 1849). --00--
