On 27th October 1813 he was an 18 year old errand boy, convicted at Middlesex for stealing, in company with William Duffett, thirty five penny-pieces and fifty halfpennies. Sentence to 7 years transportation. Old Bailey ref no t18131027-128 He was placed on the Hulks at Woolwich - Date Received: 12 Mar 1814 Ship: Retribution Place Moored: Woolwich. Joseph was among the convicts transported aboard the “Baring”, departed England 20th April 1815, arrived Sydney Cove 7th September 1815. A trip of 140 days. Three hundred (300) male convicts boarded the “Baring” from England and 298 male convicts disembarked at Sydney. The Master of the ship was Jn Lamb and the ship’s surgeon was David Reid. Joseph was forwarded to Parramatta for distribution, and appears on some lists as John Herne Joseph appears in 1822 census as employed at Orphan School, Liverpool. In June 1822 he was tried at Court of Criminal Jurisdiction accused of stealing a sheep. Found not guilty Joseph appears on the 1823, 24, 25 musters as a Labourer at Prospect. He is subsequently employed as a labourer by, and residing with, Mr James Newell at Liverpool Road, Lower Minto. In 1824 Joseph applies for new certificate of freedom, his hut had burnt down and the original was lost. In November 1828 Joseph applied for permission to marry Elizabeth Sherridan per “Elizabeth II”. His application stated, he was aged 33 years, able to support a wife and was of good character. On the 12th November 1828 Joseph was baptised into Catholic Church at Liverpool. Entry on baptism certificate reads --- Rec'd into church Joseph Hearne without Cerem. - Bap't L’pool. Joseph probably became a catholic in order to marry Elizabeth. They were married 12th November by Rev D. Powerand at St Mary’s RC Chapel Sydney and settled in the Prospect Area on the outskirts of Sydney. Joseph died 25th November 1861. Buried at the Pastoral Cemetery, Prospect NSW. Pleurisy was the verdict of a Coroner’s inquest held 26th November 1861 in the district of Parramatta. The informant on the death certificate was G I Smith - Householder of Prospect. The name or Joseph’s wife given by G Smith was Brown, Christian name unknown.
