Convict Notes


Convicted at the Lancaster Assizes 10/03/1824, Ellen had previously served 6 months in the castle for theft at Haslingden. Born at Ribchester, she was described as having a fair complexion, brown short hair, grey eyes, rather slender, a burn scar on the brawn of her left thumb. She was recorded as having stolen; one cloth pelisse, 1 straw bonnet, one pair stays, 1 silk gown, 5 pairs of cotton stockings, 1 pair gloves, 1 pair of boots, 1 silk handkerchief, 1 stuff gown, 1 pair of pattens, 1 sovereign 5 shillings, a watch chain, 2 work bags, a red leather morrocco case and variety of small trinkets from Reverend William Carus Wilson's house at Tunstall. Rev Carus Wilson was the inspiration for the school master in Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre'. Charlotte had attended his church whilst a nearby pupil at Cowan Bridge.
