Irish Convict Database by Peter Mayberry. Patrick Hickey, age 20, per Norfolk (3) 1832, Tried Tipperary, 1831,7 years, for Perjury, DOB, 1812, native place, Tipperary, single, Trade: Gardener. Catholic. --------------------------------------------------- Patrick Hickey was then arraigned, for that on the I8th of Sept, last, in informations sworn before, a Magistrate, Gerald Fitzgerald Esq., did say that he knew the person, and was well acquainted with John Todd, which he at the present Assizes refused to support by evidence, trial put off until Friday. Tipperary Free Press, 26 March 1831. ------------------------------------------------------ Patrick Hickey, was indicted for wilful and corrupt perjury on the trial of John Todd, (at this Assizes) who was charged with shooting at W. Pnrefoy Esq. on the second of December last. Gerald Fitzgerald Esq. sworn—Knows the prisoner at the bar ; is a resident Magistrate of Police for this county; took the informations of the prisoner the bar, on the 18th of September; believes the prisoner of the bar is able to read and write; prisoner signed the informations; far as witness could perceive understood them ; is the same P. Hickey of Shanballymore, who sign, the informations against John Todd of Anakarry ; was present when the prisoner at the bar was produced a prosecutor against said John Todd recollects he was asked on that trial if was not previously well acquainted with said John Todd and prisoner answered not; on the prisoners direct examination, he swore to the identical John Todd as the person. Cross-examined Counsellor Ronayne—-The Hickeys were taken upon the evening of the day on which Mr. Purefoy was fired at—prisoner, his father, mother, and sister; kept them in close confinement 16 days in the barrack of Thurles ; went there prisoner, having received letter from him; the Hickeys were never charged with firing the shots ; witness had deposition against the father; the daughter swore informations ; does not know why she was not brought here; witness has obtained good deal of information from time to time. (Here Judge Torrens retired, and a Juryman having put question to Dr. F. which was about to answer. Counsellor Ronayne insisted that the reply should only be given in presence of the Court. Some altercation ensued, which was by the Judge's entrance into Court, and the matter being explained, his Lordship said it would be better the Jury abstained from putting questions until the cross-examination of Counsel was concluded.) Examination resumed— Would have detained if had not given informations ....
