Tried and convicted in Somerset of stealing fowls, sentenced to transportation for 14 years. Left England on 27th July 1830. Ship:- the 'Burrell' sailed with 192 male convicts on board of which 3 died during the voyage. Arrived on 19th December 1830. John was able to read and write and was 27 years old at the time. He left wife Mary and his three children behind in England. On arrival he was assigned to Robert Johnston, son of George and Esther Johnston on their estates at Bankstown and Cabramatta, and was eventually employed as an overseer to David Johnston at Johnston's Meadows, Albion Park. John's first wife Mary and his son Charles, died in England not long after his arrival in the colony On 10th August 1839, John married ex-convict Mary Steel at Dapto, Wollongong, New South Wales and they had five children between 1840-1848. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1837 after serving half of his sentence. Ann died in 1847 age 46. John died on 13th October 1878 in Cambewarra, Nowra District of New South Wales, age 75.
