Convict Notes

Hannah Hodge, aged 20, wife of George Hodge near the Old Barracks, in Motmishaan (Moulsham?) convicted last Assizes, of enticing a child to ... its. mother, was brought up to receive sentence, which had been delayed in consequence of a point of law, which had been submitted for the opinion of the twelve judges. The prisoner was much affected and in a state of pregnancy. She was sentenced to be transported for seven years. Ipswich Journal, 23 July 1825.

Hannah was granted a ticket of leave on the 19th May 1829 after serving just over four years of her original sentence of seven. She was permitted to remain in the district of Parramatta. After she was released she began a relationship with Henry Warren. I assume they never married because Hannah was already married to George Hodges. But Hannah went on to have children to Henry.

Hannah died at the age of 89 and is buried in Parkes. NSW. On the bicentennial of her death, a headstone was placed on her grave. The commemoration was undertaken by the Rev Samuel Marsden a descendant of the original Rev Samuel Marsden who signed Hannah’s Ticket of Leave.
