JAILS: September, 1856: Wakefield -- Separate confinement for 10 months; behaviour "very bad". 16 July, 1857: Chatham in Kent -- Inmate #1179; behaviour "very bad" (Western Australia, Australia, Convict Records, 1846-1930; Convict Department, Registers; Convicts Transported Per Nile (R32)). --00--


INDICTMENT & TRIAL: 9 August, 1856: Liverpool Assizes -- convicted on three indictments for burglary and sentenced to 8 years' penal servitude (England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892; England; Lancashire; 1856). Newspaper reports said Edmund Holt, a ticket-of-leave man, had been charged with committing several burglaries in the neighbourhood of Rochdale in the previous three months. One reported that he had pleaded guilty to committing burglary in the house of Susannah Sykes at Castleton in May (Liverpool Daily Post, Thursday 14 August 1856, p3). --00--


PREVIOUS CONVICTION: 11 April, 1850 -- stealing in company with four others a silver watch and watch key, valued at £1/1/- from Jonas Turner at Halifax. All were found guilty at the Wakefield Quarter Sessions. Edmund Holt was sentenced to 7 years' transportation. He was granted a ticket of leave, date not known (Yorkshire, England, Quarter Session Records, 1637-1914; Wakefield; Indictment; 1849 - 1850). --00--
