Mary HURLEY was convicted at Cork, Ireland in July 1848 for burglary. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Maria' arriving 23 July 1849. Country servant; 5'1"; aged 30 yrs; Roman Catholic; can read; fresh complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native Place - Co. Limerick Father - Jeramiah Brother - Michael, in America Sister - Ellen 'Anson' hulk station gang. Assigned out to work services. 13 Aug 1850: Application for Permission to Marry. 9 Sept 1850: Married Joseph McSorely, shoemaker, transported per 'North Briton' (ref. note in Conduct record & reg 37/1/9 no. 522). Indexed under "Hurly", Hobart district. 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. Jan 1853: Larceny. 6mths hard labour. 18 July 1853: Refusing to wean her child when ordered by the Surgeon. 4mths hard labour. 1854: Ticket of Leave restored. 14 Aug 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. Nov 1861: Application made to the Queens Orphanage for admission of children Rose and John McSorely, as father had deserted. Application refused. (ref. SWD26/4 27). Mother's residence - Campbell St. Hobart. 4 Sept 1866: Certificate of Freedom.
