The "Return to accompany the Caption of a Convict..." shows description, most likely from Justitia Hulk: Complexion: fair Hair: brown Eyes: grey Height: 5ft 5in Cuts moles or scars on body & limbs: Small scar left cheek, mole front of throat, small scar left breast, small do. & to front of body, 3 small moles rear of neck, 2 below do., 3 scars on spine, several blue scratches each side of do., 2 moles above and 1 below rt. elbow, blue cut back rt. hand, mole and blue cut near left elbow, 2 scars left knee Description of Person: Rather Stout, face long, head high.




Thomas Hyde was listed as 23 years old on arrival. Place of Birth: Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Father: Thomas Mother: Mary Brothers: George, Edwin, Enoch - Wolverhampton. Thomas could read and write a little, was single, 5'6¼" tall, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes. 12/12/1854: TOL 13/11/1855: CP 28/7/1860: Free Certificate. 13/2/1866 The Mercury, Hobart: SINGULAR ACCIDENT -A man named Thomas Hyde, a miner at New Town was, brought to the hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering from displacement of the left collarbone caused by the fall of the end of a rope attached to one of the ascending coal scuttles falling across the shoulder. The patient was attended by Dr. Carns and the man then returned home. Thomas Hyde (Aboukir) had been admitted to the New Town Charitable Institute from 9/7/1879 - 16 times - to 10/2/1891. In the earlier years he left the Institution and was able to work. 21/4/1891: Thomas Hyde or Hythe, died, aged 68, of Heart Disease - a labourer, he died at the New Town Charitable Institute and was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery (Paupers section).

Information from the original UK prison record of Hyde: He was described as "Collier" and crime was "Stealing a pit Rope after a fire con[?]". Convicted 3 Jan 1848 on which date his age was given as "Nineteen". He was incarcerated first at Millbank then Wakefield Prison, thence to hulks "Justitia", "Warrior" and "Stirling Castle" before transfer to Millbank again on 7 Jul 1851 prior to transportation to VDL. Character reports are: Millbank Indifferent Wakefield Low Bad Character Justitia Bad Warrior Indifferent Stirling Castle Very Bad Millbank 2nd Time Good "a Previous Conviction" is reported but no details.
