John Ireland, remanded last Thursday, on charge of stealing a quantity of lead from two unoccupied houses at Preston, the property of W. Stanford. Esq., was was brought this morning, and committed for trial at the Sessions. The prisoner was met near New England on the evening of Friday, the 15th instant, with a young man, named Samuel Wood, carrying a quantity of lead. The policeman  took Wood, who has been committed for trial ; but the prisoner Ireland made his escape, and was not taken till Wednesday last.  Brighton Gazette, 28 Dec 1837. Samuel Wood, labourer, aged 17, and John Ireland. labourer, 16, charged with stealing at Preston, in December last, 56lbs. of lead, the property of William Stanford, Esq.  were sentenced to Seven years’ transportation.
