1828: On arrival in VDL, Hyam Jacobs, a hawker, was 19 and single. He said his mother, Rosa, and a brother were living in St Martins Court, Essex Street, Whitechapel. He was supporting his mother and last worked hawking curry combs (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-23$init=CON31-1-23p152). 1830: Muster - he was assigned to Mr W Gray (see NSW and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849). 1832 and 1833: Musters - assigned to government public works. 1835: He received his Certificate of Freedom No.35/338 (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899).

JOHN FERRIS, HYAM JACOBS, Theft > simple larceny, 10th April 1828. 949. JOHN FERRIS and HYAM JACOBS were indicted for stealing, on the 26th of March , 26 lbs. weight of cheese, value 16s. , the goods of Thomas Marshall and others. FERRIS pleaded GUILTY . Aged 17. Confined Three Months and Whipped . FRANCIS KEYS . I am an officer. On the 26th of March I met Jacobs and Ferris opposite the hospital in Whitechapel; they came on to the prosecutor's shop, and Ferris took the cheese - Jacobs was about six yards from him at the time; I took Ferris with the cheese, and gave him to my brother officer - I then pursued, and took Jacobs. Prisoner JACOBS. He never knew any harm of me. Witness. I have seen him with thieves in Whitechapel. JOHN STROTHER SHOTTER . I am shopman to Messrs. Thomas Marshall and Sons. On the 26th of March I put six cheeses on the stall-board of the window, and about a quarter before eleven o'clock, I went into the parlour to put on my boots; the officer brought the prisoner and Ferris in with the cheese, which I knew to be my masters. WILLIAM HARRIS . I was with Keys; I confirm what he has stated. JACOBS's Defence. I may walk up and down the road without doing any harm; I saw the other with the cheese - I do not know where he got it. JACOBS - GUILTY . Aged 18. Transported for Seven Years . ---------------------------------------------------- ADM 101/48/2 Medical journal of the Manlius, convict ship from 6 June to 17 November 1828 by P M Ternan, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the ship was employed in a voyage to Van Diemen's Land. Folios 10-11: Hyram Jacobs, aged 18, prisoner, taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, chronic bronchitis, complained of cephalgia for some days as well as pectoral disturbance; put on sick list 4 September 1828, discharged 9 November 1828 well.
