Edward Johnston, another boy about 15, indicted for burglary in the house of Alexander Finlay, of Belfast, on 31st May last. Charles Ferguson knows Alexander Finlay; he lives in Belfast; was his servant; about the 31 May last, was sleeping on the kitchen table about ? o’clock at night, and heard noise of the window pulling down; saw man’s hands in the window; witness leaped onto the floor and looked at prisoner, and he at witness ; he called to his master, and prisoner ran off;, knew him next day in the police office; his hands were the window, and his fingers inside; identifies prisoner. For the defence, Henry McCurley was examined for prisoner, to prove alibi, but failed. Guilty, sentence of death recorded; to be transported for life. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 11 Aug 1827. Mr. Erskine, the Governor of the County Antrim Gaol, through this town at six o’clock in the morning of the 17th inst. with the under-named convicts, their way for the hulk at Kingstown ; Michael McKenna, John McKenna, Edward Johnston, John Lennon, James Morrison, John McCusker, Charles Mullan, Rice Clements, Joseph Headley, Robert Hamilton, James Cullen, James Canning, John Keiran, Wm. McAuley, John Dogherty, Thomas Beatty. From the private manner they were removed from the gaol, are happy to state there was (no) crowd or confusion here, such as we often witness on those occasions. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 22 Dec 1827.
