1844, 21 March: Mathew JOHNSTONE per Neptune 1838 was granted an Absolute Pardon – received in October 1844 (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Registers of Conditional and Absolute Pardons, 1788-1870; Absolute 1828-1857 (Reel 801)). 1844, 18 September: MATHEW JOHNSTON was granted a Certificate of Freedom No.44/1379. Listed as born in 1824 (see New South Wales, Australia, Certificates of Freedom, 1810-1814, 1827-1867; (NRS 12210) Butts of Certificates of Freedom 1844, September, All Records).

1837, 17 August: Mathew JOHNSTON was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Armagh (prisoner #699). He had been tried on 21 June 1837, convicted and sentenced to 7 years by E. Tickell Esq. for larceny (stealing iron, according to Convict Indents). He was described as 14 (born 1823), 4’6½” tall with brown eyes, brown hair and a sallow complexion. 1837, 19 August: Discharged from Kilmainham to be “embarked on board Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910). 1838: On arrival in NSW, Matthew JOHNSTON, a Protestant, was 14, single, and an errand boy. He could read and write. His native place was Co Armagh. He had a previous conviction, resulting in a prison term of one month. He was described as 5'7¾", with a ruddy and pockpitted complexion, brown hair and chestnut eyes (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Non-Annotated Printed Indentures 1838). Note: Huge difference in his height between these records!
