William Keate was born in the year 1824 in Clerkenwell. London, England. He was baptised William Harrison Keyte on the 12/10/1830 St Leonards, Shoreditch along with his two brothers Robert and John. (My line is via his brother Roberts lineage). According to the 1841 Census William and his family were residing at: 52 RAWSTORN STREET. DISTRICT CLERKENWEL, GOSWELL STREET. WILLIAM KEYTE (45) WATCH CASE MAKER, ANN (MOTHER) 70, WILLIAM (15), ROBERT (15), JOHN (10). ROBERT (15?) NEPHEW?, CHARLES WILLIAMS 23 PRINTER, ANN WILLIAMS 21(NEE KEYTE) WIFE AND NIECE? CHARLES WILLIIAMS (2) AND FREDERICK WILLIAMS (3MTHS). William was sentenced to 3 mths imprisonment when he was 17: WILLIAM KEYTE , the younger, ( and' Along with John Hoy) was indicted for stealing, on the 28th of October, 1 coat, value 3s., the goods of John William Hurst ; also for stealing, on the 8th of November, 1 coat, value 10s.; and 1 pair of trousers, value 3s.; the goods of John William Hurst ; to both of which he pleaded GUILTY . Aged 17.— Confined Three Months. I think I am right this meant, William was free to travel to Australia and not remain confined to Tasmania (which he would have to do if he only received a ticket of leave). And that he could also have returned to the UK if he wanted and could afford to!
