Irish Convict Database by Peter Mayberry. Michael Keefe, alias O’Keefe, age 50, per Norfolk (3) 1832, Tried Tipperary, 1831, 7 years, for Assault, DOB, 1782, native place, Tipperary, married, 6 children, Trade: Ploughman. Catholic. --------------------------------------------------- John White and Michael Keeffe were put the bar charged with a violent assault on Denis Brien ; this witness persisting in not answering English, was ordered into the dock, until he should disposed answer in English, immediately after this he was ordered to the gaol. Clonmel Herald, 23 March 1831. -------------------------------------------------- John White and Michael Keefe, for aggravated assault on Denis Brian. Brian sworn, persisted in not being able to speak English. though when Denis Brien having returned from the gaol, where he remained for where he remained for about two hours, and earned to speak the English language fluently, gave the following testimony: ... was returning home last Oct. and was near the bridge of Kilmoyler when he met John White and others; White pitched witness and his master to the Devil, Michael Keefe and a woman were with White ; it was early in the night; White told witness that the road was too narrow for them both, and then went into a field; soon after White came to witness armed with scythe and said he would kill him ; Michael Keefe was with White ; White struck witness and cut his coat, witness grappled with White, and Keefe then came and struck him him with a stone on the head, and he became senseless ; is quite sure that White and Keefe are the persons who injured him ; witness broke tbe scythe n the struggle with White and threw part of it into the dyke, where it was found, was removed after into Bolan's house. ....
