Catherine Kelly was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

The Convict Indentures state that Catherine Kelly was 0years old. She could neither read or write; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Galway, Ireland. She was a kitchen maid. Catherine was convicted of stealing money, assault and robbery on 30 July 1838 at Galway and sentenced to 10 years transportation. She had one prior conviction for which she served 5 months. Physical attributes: Height 4 feet 9 1/2 inches; ruddy, freckled and pock pitted; hair light sandy and eyes grey. Transport number 152. Prisoner number 150-39.
