Text type Trial account Defendants MARY KING Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 21st August 1843 Reference Number t18430821-2495 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 2495. MARY KING was indicted for stealing, on the 7th of Aug., 1 ihawl, value 5s.; the goods of John Kemp; and that he had been before convicted of felony. MARTHA LEVENE . I was standing near Mr. Kemp's shop on the 7th of Aug.—I saw the prisoner take a shawl which hung at his door—I did not we her unpin it, but she dragged it down—there were three together—she took the middle one, and put it under her own shawl—I gave information. Prisoner. Q. Why should you iwcar to me when there were, other girls round? A. There was no one but you. WILLIAM WAEEHAM . I am shopman, to John Kemp. I ran after the prisoner to Reform-place—I went to a house I saw the prisoner in, and a man gave me the shawl from under the table—it is my master's. Prisoner. Did not I say I did not know wheie it was. Witness, No—you laid, "Let me go, and say I dropped it." STEPHEN REEVE . I produce a certificate of the prisoner's former conviction, which I got from Mr. Clark's office—(read)—she is the person. GUILTY . Aged 19.— Transported for Seven Years.
