Martha KIRKHAM was convicted at York, England on 4 Jan 1848 for stealing feathers. Previous convictions. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Tory' arriving 6 Aug 1848. Married woman - husband Samuel, at native place. Aged 32 years; 5'2 1/4"; laundress; Protestant. Native place: Manchester, England. Brother: Joseph, at native place. (Convict Indent does not indicate if "Kirkham" is her maiden or married name. No children indicated) VDL: 6 mth Probation Period. 'Anson' station Hulk. 18 Dec 1849: Application for Permission to Marry. (Convict women were encouraged to remarry in the Colony to provide a stable social environment. Govt permission was required). Approved to marry Richard GROVES (who was transported per the 'Asia'). 20 May 1850: Marriage, at Bothwell, VDL. Martha KIRKHAM aged 34yrs, needle woman to Richard GROVES, aged 36yrs, trade - a groom. (ref. 37/1/9 no. 56) 1 Feb 1853: Ticket of Leave granted. 19 Dec 1854: Conditional Pardon approved. 29 July 1858: Free Certificate issued.
