Thomas Mitchell and John Leonard, were indicted for stealing in the dwelling house of our Sovereign Lady, the Queen, situate at Appin, on the 29th of July last, £20 in bank notes, the property of Owen Laragy, one Catherine Laragy being at the time in the said dwelling house, and being put in bodily fear. The circumstances of the case were briefly these. Laragy is keeper of the lock-up situate at Appin, and the two prisoners were in his custody there on the day laid in the indictment, charged with bushranging. Laragy having occasion to go from home for a short time, left his wife, an aged woman, in charge of the lock-up in his absence ; during which, some strange man came and released the two prisoners from confinement ; upon which they turned upon the old woman, broke open her husband’s box, and took his money, Mitchell giving her a severe kick over the temple from which the blood flowed. They then locked Mrs Laragy up in a cell, and departed. A person coming by the lock-up a few minutes afterwards, attracted by her screams, dismounted from his horse, released Mrs Laragy from confinement, and galloped after and overtook the two prisoners, but they having sticks in their possession, and he being unarmed, he did not think it prudent to come to extremities with them. A few days afterwards, however, the prisoners were captured by the police. The Jury returned a verdict of guilty against both the prisoners, and it having been intimated to the learned judge that they had already been to a Penal Settlement, they were remanded, in order to give His Honor an opportunity of obtaining from the Principal Superintendent of Convicts, a return shewing forth their former histories. The Australian, 7 Nov 1837. ————————————————————————————- Missing Friends. Information is requested respecting Owen Laragy, per “Almorah,” 1820. Information to the Inspector General of Police. NSW Police Gazette, 7 Jan 1880.
