The following advertisement appeared in the Illawarra Mercury on Tuesday 9 April 1861: GALWAY FARM, WEST DAPTO. TO-MORROW, APRIL 10. F. R. COLE is favored with instructions from Mr. P. Larkins, to sell by auction at Galway Farm, ON THE ABOVE DATE. A Capital Farm, containing 64 acres 1 rood, of which 50 acres are felled, 10 cleared, and a large portion laid down with artificial grasses ; it has also a never failing supply of the purest water, and adjoins Mr. Martin Larkin's well-known farm. Also, the following valuable Live Stock, &c., viz: 20 First-rate milking and in-calf cows and heifers 15 Head of young stock 3 Good Bulls 1 Pair working bullocks 4 Horses Spring-cart and harness Pole dray 291 Posts 952 Rails A quantity of flour, &c , &c. The quality of Mr. Larkin's cattle is well-known to all dairymen, and the public may rest assured that both cattle and land are for absolute sale. In the information I have Peter Larkin, (our convict ancestor) was born in 1788 (rather than 1787) in Gort, County Galway, in the west of Ireland. It is on the main road between Galway and Limerick. His son Martin was an industrialist, builder and hotel owner in the MossVale district. Martins son Peter Francis Larkin was the father of my great grandfather Martin Francis Joseph Larkin who died at Queanbeyan N.S.W. in Aug 1936. Peter Francis (my great, great, great grandfather had 12 children. Elizabeth A. L., Mary J. L., George E L., John V L., Martin F. L., Annie M. L., Matilda L., Peter H. L., Patrick T. L., Kitty L., Percy A. L., and William B. Larkin. My grandfather Martin Francis Larkin married Anne Mary Dunlop and they had six children Francis Vincent Larkin, Rachael Larkin, Kathleen Larkin, Mary Ann Larkin, Annie Amelia Larkin (my grandmother) and Lena Larkin.




Believed by family to have been a member of the Hearts Of Steel, a early organised labour movement. Arrested by a Captain(?) D'Arcy. Charged with 'administering a prohibited oath'. (I am writing these notes from memory. I read them as a child in a family history book written by my cousin David Austin Larkin) My grandmother was Annie Amelia Larkin, my great grandfather was Martin Larkin Jnr.

Peter Larkin was tried with Gleeson and Patrick Staunton in Galway, Ireland in August 1820. convicted at the Galway Assizes for burglary and seditious practices. Patrick Staunton was not indicted on the capital charge) Peter Larkin and Gleeson were sentenced to death but Larkins was reduced to transportation for life 1822 muster: Peter Larkin assigned to Major George Druitt. In 1823 through Father JJ Therry, he made a request for his famiy to join him in the colony - his wife Bridget and 4 children sailed from Cork, Ireland on 3 October 1826 arrived on 2nd February 1827 on the ship Brothers. Peter was then assigned to Bridget and had an 'Exemption from government labour' ticket. Children of PETER LARKIN and BRIDGET CUNNINGHAM are: 4. PATRICK LARKIN, b. 1817, Kilbeacanty, County Galway, Ireland; d. 10 Jul 1889, Dapto. 7. CATHERINE LARKIN, b. 1820, Ireland; d. 06 Jul 1865, Bergalia Nsw Australia. 15/2/1878: Peter died aged 95 and was buried at the West Dapto Catholic Cemetery. Bridget was born in 1792 and died 29/6/1851 at Dapto.
