Robert Latus was transported on the Woodman, departing 1st Dec 1825 and arriving 29th Apr 1826 with 150 passengers.
1823 Journey. SHIP News.— The ship Woodman, Captain Ford, arrived from Ireland, via Rio de Janiero, on Wednesday evening the 25th ult. She brings 94 female convicts, in good health; together with 8 children. Including children, there are 38 free passengers, by this opportunity, mostly destined for Van Diemen's Land. Assigned on arrival in VDL to T C Simpson, a well-to-do person in Launceston. Served 11 years and received conditional parson no 1439 in 1837. Next heard of in Port Philip (Melbourne) in 1842 where he marries Anne Jane East (migrant from London) but she dies almost immediately. Robert prospers as a carter and then property-owner, coinciding with the Gold Rush and growth of Melbourne. He becomes wealthy and lives in an exclusive part of the city, St Kilda's. He is buried there.




Robert latus was 17 in 1824, when he shot and wounded a strikebreaker in Preston Lancashire during an industrial dispute.(ref.Lancaster Gazette March 19th 1825).In 1896 a former Preston Union leader recalled how Latus prospered in Australia and became a great landowner,(ref Preston Guardian January 25th 1896)
