Convict Notes

Newspaper clippings Manchester Times and Gazette 11 Feb 1843 SUPPOSED FELONIES: Sophia Lever was brought up at the Borough Court, charged with stealing two aprons. Mr Gaskell applied to have the prisoner remanded until Saturday; several pawn tickets having been found upon her, of articles supposed to be stolen. She was remanded accordingly. Bolton Chronicle 18 Feb 1843 THEFT FROM A DWELLING HOUSE - A girl named Sophia Lever, evidently of weak mind, was charged with stealing a shawl, the property of Robert Mann, of Blackburn Street. The prisoner was also charged with stealing two aprons, the property of Margaret Webster of Bolling's House. Both charges were clearly sustained by the evidence. Mr Harris said, there was another charge against her of stealing a piece of print from a shop in Deansgate. Mr Balshaw said it was generally considered that she was of weak mind. The mayor said the bench considered it the best thing they could do to commit her for two months as she would be taken care of; and they trusted that when she returned, some provision would be made for her. Bolton Chronicle 06 Jan 1844 Sophia Lever, aged 19, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing on the 26th of November, a coat, the property of Samuel Scholefield and was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
