His daughter Eliza Ann married Herbert Powell (Hubert) whose headstone is one of the old ones as you cross the bridge to North Ballina.




Matthias & Mary had 14 children between 1843-1866:- Matthias Isaac 1843, Hester 1844, Rosetta 1846, Joseph 1848, Matilda 1850, Hannah 1852, Sarah 1853, George Alfred 1855, Mary Ann Elizabeth 1857, Ruth Jane 1858, Eliza Ann 1860, Henry Thomas 1863, Albert Charles 1864 & William 1866. There son George Alfred George Alfred Lewis (1855-1923) served as Alderman of the Ballina Council 1904-1908. Built a 2 storey building for the Australian Joint Stock Bank and established a cordial factory. He was President of the Turf Club. When he moved from Ballina and was presented with an illuminated address before he left which bore the signatures of many Ballina dignitaries.

Reference Number: t18280529-215 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation MATTHIAS ISAAC LEWIS was indicted for stealing, on the 22d of May , 24 penny-pieces, the monies of William Wilson . WILLIAM WILSON. I keep a rag-shop in Back-lane, St. George's in the East . On the 22d of May I saw the prisoner behind my counter - he must have crept in upon his hands and knees; he had taken the till out, and placed it on a bag on the floor; I went to him - he said a person had thrown in his cap, and he came to fetch it; I had left the till safe five minutes before - it contained copper. CHARLES CHAPMAN . I am an officer, and took him in charge. Prisoner's Defence. A boy threw my cap in; I saw the till on the floor. GUILTY . Aged 13. Transported for Seven Years. 23/7/1835: COF 1842: Married Mary Tate (daughter of George Tate and Eliza Manning) at Brisbane Water. (4? Children.) Matthias owned a store in South Ballina. The store was washed out in floods and then he moved to Norton St., Ballina. His wife Mary started a small private school for her own children and some of the neighbour’s children. 3/8/1885: Matthias drowned and was buried at the Pioneer cemetery, Ballina.




Matthais Isaac (or Israel) Lewis was transported to New South Wales on the 'Florentia' arriving 1830. He was only aged 16yrs and was sent to Carter's Barracks, Sydney (section for boys).
