1840 - Commercial Journal and Advertiser. Sat 8 Feb 1840. Page 3. SUPREME COURT. Richard Lewis stood indicted for forging a; promissory note for £5, on the 10th October: last, purporting to have been signed by one Samuel Saunders Simpson, and dated from Cockatoo Island. Pleaded Guilty. The Judge, prior to passing the sentence of the Court upon the prisoner, stated that the old statute, which made the 'punishment life, had been repealed : by the British Parliament ; but the Act so repealed did not extend to this Colony. In ? his -Honor, in passing the sentence of the Court upon the prisoner, said that he should recommend that it is commuted to seven years transportation: the English Act making the punishment, on conviction, seven years: transportation, or 'four years imprisonment. Prisoner was then sentenced to be transported for the term of his natural life. 1840 - New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books Trade; Surgeon. Advertising ADVERTISEMENT. A GENTLEMAN, named Richard Lewis, a native of Cork, was in 1830 deported to Australia for forging a bill of £12. His banishment expired December, 1837 ; of highly reputable connections; aged then about 28 years / 5 feet 9 in height, fair complexion ; fond of dissipation ; of gentlemanly demeanor. His young wife, son, and daughter, deplore Ins absence, living in a state of incertitude. not knowing whether he exists. A suite in Equity is now pending since the expiration of his term of exile in 1837. Since his departure he never wrote to his wife or other person ; this causes ? abatement of ? proceeding in Equity. His disconsolate wife or widow and young family are in deep distress, awaiting some genuine information respecting the fate of this Mr. R. Lewis, if lie is now in this, colony - or when and where lie retired to from' his place of banishment.
