James was baptised son of James and Ann Lugg in St Martin's Birmingham on May 31 1798. James was 5 feet 6 inches tall, of ruddy complexion and had two remaining teeth. He had lost all the fingers of his right hand. He was transported to Norfolk Island for life by the Criminal Court of Sydney on 7 May 1822 and granted a certificate of freedom on 8 February 1841.
