Attempted Murder. Bryan Lynch, John Monaghan, Patrick Kiernan, Patrick Darcy and.James Murphv, indicted for assaulting and discharging a loaded gun at Thomas Gannon. Thomas Gannon—Lived with Mr Morris, of Mutlaha, as a labourer in November last; lived with him for 5 years; not now in his employment; left it about a month after he was beaten ; is a county Mayo man, and returned there after left Mr. Morris; comes from Castlebar; was beaten about 3 weeks before last Christmas; had house from Mr, Morris in which he (witness) with his wife, four children and his mother in-law ; his mother-in-law is old and sickly; she is in Mayo, but his wife is here; was at supper between 7 and 8 o'clock ; two men came in ; one of them struck the candle out and then the rest came in and beat him ; there was very good fire after dressing the supper and could see all over the house ; they dragged him out of the house and put him on his knees ; when saw a brass piece come towards him he gave a leap and made towards his master’s gate; the man snapped the gun, but  but it did not go off ; was stopped by man the gate and another man who came from the ditch fired at him (witness) ; heard the whistle of the ball between his right arm and right hip ; ran a few perches) they followed and beat him ; prisoner gave him several wounds with a stick in the head ; attempted to  get up but was no sooner than was knocked down again ; was put on his knees and told to quit the country next morning, and he replied that he would quit it then if they would spare his life, that had a large family. They then came one by one and asked him if knew them ; he said he did not; Bryan Lynch was the man who had the brass gun ; (identifies the prisoners) ; there were two other men there who are not here ; saw a stick in John Kiernan’s hand; it was he who gave him the last blow ; they were all him, went to Mr. Morris immediately after the beating; Mr. Morris advised him to go to his own country where he would be safe ; there were two shots fired ; the man who missed at first fired afterwards. Nothing material was elicited on the cross-examination.— The testimony of Gannon was corroborated by Mr. Morris and two other witnesses The defence was an alibi. The Jury found all the prisoners Guilty. Judgment of death recorded. Drogheda Journal, 10 March 1832.
