Martha Madden was transported on the Margaret, departing 30th Apr 1840 and arriving 18th Aug 1840 with 78 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Belfast Quarter Sessions. Martha Madden, for stealing a gown and pellerine, the property of Susan M'Naul, near Belfast, on 25th Dec. last. Guilty; to be transported for seven years. The prisoner had been ten times in Jail. Belfast News-letter, 17 Jan 1840.




Prisoner's No; 344-40. No; 13. Aged; 35 years old on arrival. Status; Married with 1 female child. Remarks; HUSBAND; James [Higgins crossed out] [Hagan per St Vincent noted against name] out abt 4 years




Martha was the second wife of Samuel Phillips (Jnr)
