William was the son of Benjamin Madderah and Elizabeth, nee Nightingale. Born 18 Mar 1803 in York, England. Christened 20 Mar 1803 at St. Mary Castlegate, York. He was an habitual criminal. The town's newspaper, the York Herald reports the following court appearances: 22 Jan 1825 Accused of stealing 6lbs of beef. Acquitted. 5 May 1827 Guilty of shop breaking. 12 months hard labour. 16 August 1828 Accused of pick pocketing. Acquitted through lack of evidence. 29 Nov 1828 Guilty of drunk and disorderly behaviour. 1 month hard labour. 31 Jan 1829 Guilty of stealing a pair of boots. 7 years, transportation.
