Medina 1823. Surgeon’s Journal states: 27 August 1823; Received on board 180 male prisoners. 2: 5 September 1823; Got under way from the Cove of Cork and made all sail for ultimate destination. Two days before our departure 3 of the convicts were taken away in consequence of orders, and it was intended to have replaced them by others, but our short stay would not admit of it. The remaining convicts were 177. One convict died at sea. SHIP NEWS.—On Monday evening last arrived from the Cove of Cork, which she left on the 5th of September, with 176 male convicts, the ship Medina, Captain Brown. The guard comprises a detachment of the 40th, under orders of Lieutenant Gunning. Assistant Surgeon Coleman, 40th Regiment, comes by this opportunity The Surgeon Superintendent is Dr. Rodmell, R N. who was here before in the Mary transport. Sydney Gazette, 1 Jan 1824.

Maurice Mahony “aged 13” transported on Medina for 7 years. Crime: Lord lieutenant’s warrants for “Medina” records “Burglary” but Certificate of Freedom 1830 records “House Robbery”. Tried Cork City, Spring sizes 1823 (commenced 25th March 1823 per Freemans Journal 1 April 1823). AGE - Probably more likely aged 15 yrs based on 1828 Census age and year of birth 1808 on Certificate of Freedom. Medina sailed on 5th September 1823 and arrived on 29th December 1823. Also on board was Jeremiah Mahony aged 19 tried at same assizes and also recorded as “Robbery” on warrants .. was he a relative? There was also an older Dennis Mahony aged 24 tried at Cork City the previous year. 29 Dec 1823 - Arrived NSW. Medina Indent - Errand boy 26 March 1823 AGED 13. only 5ft 1in Fair complexion, brown hair and eyes. Remarks “Very well”. On arrival sent to the Carters Barracks. June 1828 Ticket of Leave for Bathurst area 26th June, 1828. Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, “LIST of PERSONS who have obtained Tickets of Leave since the last Day of Publication : MAHONY, Maurice, Medina.” [per Sydney Gazette 30 June 1828 page 1] 1828 Census Maurice Mahony, Medina aged 20yrs (Implies 15 on arrival) GS, 7 yrs, Catholic, Bullock Driver for Japhet White, Bathurst ( Employer - Japhet White 7 years per “Surry” in 1816, ex impoverished attorney in Dublin, convicted Dublin for having forged stamps in his possession got land at Bathurst, wife Mary came free on same ship with 2 children. Had permission 1825 to buy 100 acres land at Bathurst.) 4th April, 1829. Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, "Tickets of Leave cancelled for neglect of Duty and Insolence" (Sydney Gazette, 9 April 1829 page 1) Certificate of Freedom 11 May 1830 no 30/280: Native of Cork, labourer, house robbery tried Cork City, Spring sizes 1823. Born 1808, 5ft 4 &3/4 inches, sallow complexion, dark brown hair. hazel grey eyes DIED 1830 or January 1831 -recorded sideways on Certificate of Freedom: “ Torn up 22 January 1831 on its receipt from the Supt of Police at Bathurst who reports in his letter of the 20th in part that the holder is dead.”
