Edward MANN was convicted at Bristol, England on 9 Jan 1838 for stealing money. Previous offence. 7 yr transportation sentence. Flogged whilst held on a Hulk. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Gilmore' arriving 22 Jan 1839. Ship surgeon's report: "good". Single man; aged 20 yrs; a painter; 5'4 1/2" height; sallow complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes; scars on hand. Native place of birth: Gloucester, England. (ref. convict record) VDL: 24 July 1840: Assigned to Mr. Harbottle. Drunk & disorderly. 14 days solitary confinement, on bread & water. 24 Aug 1840: Prison Barracks - being on the premises of Mr. Harbottle, after being removed from his service. 3 mths hard labour at Cleveland Road Party. 3 Feb 1843: Ticket of Leave granted. 1843: Free Certificate issued. Application for permission to marry: 31 May 1843 - Edward MANN per 'Gilmore' to Jane CANNONS, free. Approved. Marriage: 27 July 1843 at the Police Office, Westbury, Launceston district, VDL, according to rites of the Church of England. Edward MANN, aged 28 yrs, glazier to Jane CANNONS aged 29 yrs, spinster. (ref. 37/1/3 no. 272) CHILD: 11 Aug 1847: Jane MANN born at Longford. Father - Edward Mann, farmer. Mother - Jane Mann formerly Cannon.
