23/3/1791 Hereford Journal Herefordshire, England: Stafford Assizes. J. Marcus, for stealing plate, &c. from M. Daintrv, esq. Joseph Marcus was born in Mannheim C1758, although his headstone details make his birth year as 1765. Joseph Marcus, who would act as Australia’s first rabbi in years to come. Joseph was Jewish, he had come from Germany via England and spoke English with a German accent. He was single, and his occupation was a Hawker. Marus claimed to have studied at yeshivot (rabbinical Colleges) in Poland and in Jerusalem. Colonial Secretary Papers: MARCUS, Joseph. Per "Pitt", 1792 1811 Jan 15: Farmer at Georges River.
