In the colony, John married Faith Cooper about 1823. Faith was the daughter of the NSW Corps private, Robert Cooper and his wife Eleanor. Faith had come free to the colony with her parents aboard “Ann II” in 1810.
Faith and John had 10 children between 1823 and 1844.
