Richard Matthews was 33 years old, single and his native place was Leicestershire, England. His occupation was a “Soldier/Wood comber”.
Richard is listed on the Convict Death Register as having died at the Lunatic Asylum at Newcastle from disease of the heart.
Richard was under confinement for 24 years, he had been in the British army for many years and was a Sergeant. He was 55 years old when he went into the asylum (the birth date stated does not tally with this, but then so many don’t).
It was stated that his mental problems were brought on by the faithlessness of his wife (found no marriage for him). He love children and was unrestained in the Asylum and did light servant duties.
