Michael McDonnell was a deserter from the 63rd (west Suffolk)Regiment of Foot during its deployment to Ireland 1798-1802. Deserters could at the time be tied over a cannon mouth or branded depending on the type of desertion. Those that were not from cowardice were branded over the heart front and back with a large D particular to the Regiment. The 63rd Regiment of Foot was fated to provide escort and garrison duty in Australia and its colonies from 1829-1833. One of Australias better Known members of the 63rd was Van Diemens Land John Peyton Jones, famous for feeding sharks and using savage dogs to stop escapees. He became Police Magistrate for VDL and my family married into his childrens line, also of course my family provided him with a job by being convicts

The 63rd Regiment merged with the 96th Regiment in 1881 to become The Manchester Regiment and to this day my family continues to provide the soldiers and also the British Justice Department with criminals
